Photos Entry - National Day Celebration and Pizza Party!

Hello class,

I miss all of you, especially those who didn't come for the BBQ for some reason. Hope everyone is doing fine. And amongst them, look at Daniel aka Danny Boy! He's so cute and funny whenever he pose for the camera! This picture was taken when all of you were being punished (remember?) but all of you can still look so happy and energetic!

More class photos!

I figure most of you are enjoying the holidays pretty much. Whether you spend it at home or outside, you travel or go out with friends, this is the time for all of you to enjoy!

However, very soon school will start again. There are about 3 weeks left of the holidays so make FULL use of it. As much as you have fun, do spend some time preparing just a little for next year studies. Even taking some time to read everyday or a few times a week will be very useful, especially for English!

Now, enjoy the rest of the photos taken in school, during my last week with all of you or so. Looking at them makes me recall the good and the 'not-so-good' times together. How much I miss all of you since I left the school and might not be able to teach you all again.

Nonetheless, I am very very proud of each and every single one of you and I can see unlimited potential in all of you. Enjoy the pictures, you can email me at mrlim.j2008@gmail.com if you want the original photo. If not, you can just right click and save!

Live your Life like a Coffee Bean

Live your life as a coffee bean would

No one says that life is a bed of roses. We all know that it comes with its fair share of trials and tribulations.

However, our focus need not just be on the problems.

Solutions are at hand on most occasions, but are not necessarily always easy to find. Tackling these situations armed with a positive mindset is by far the best recommended course of action.

Exhibiting a dejected aura is a sure-fire path to grief - akin to admitting defeat when the battle has not even begun.

Personally,I cannot fathom why there are people out there who prefer to see the glass as half-empty rather than half-full. These are the same types who are already anxiously waiting for the worst before anything happens to them.

I am reminded a story told to me by a colleague recently about a young woman who went to her mother and told her how hard her life was and that she wasn't sure if she was going to make it through. She was tired of struggling and was on the verge of giving up. Her mother took her to the kitchen, filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fame.

She then placed carrots into the first, eggs into the second and ground coffee beans in the third. After twenty minutes of silence and just watching the contents boil, she turned off the burners.

She fished the carrots and eggs out and placed them into separate bowls. She then ladled the coffee into a large mug. The mother handed the first bowl to her daugher and asked her to feel the carrots, She did and noted they were soft. The mother then asked her daughter to take an egg and break it. She did and, after peeling off the shell, handed her mother a hard-boiled egg.

Finally, the mother then asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich flavour and then asked: "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had undergone the same "trial" - being boiled in water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and relenting, but come out softened and weak. The fagile egg, with its liquid interior, become hardened after the ordeal.

The ground coffee beans, however, were unique. After they were steeped in the boiling water, they started to change the consistency of the liquid. She then went on to ask her daughter: "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

You may want to ponder these questions: Am I the carrot that seems strong, but who, with pain and affliction, wilts, becomes soft and loses my strength? Or am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart and a fluid spirit, but after a death, break-up or a financial crisis, becomes somewhat hardened? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the boiling water, the very circumstances that bring it pain. It releases its fragrant aroma and flavour within those adverse conditions.

If you are like the bean, then when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is at its darkest, you elevate yourself positively to a whole new level.

I'd like to encourage you to take a tip from this story: go forth and live life like a coffee bean!

Gosh, I feel like a low-fat latte right now. Join me?

Meaningful Stories

Dear class,

Hope you enjoyed the bbq session we had! If you want the photos, you can ask from me. You can also add me at my MSN: kslim85@hotmail.com.

Currently, I am quite busy and might not have time to send all of you the photos. Should be able to by December. And since it's the holidays, I shall post some stories for you to read.

TWO SEEDS

Two seeds lay side by side in the fertile soil.

The first seed said, "I want to grow! I want to send my roots deep into the soil beneath me, and thrust my sprouts through the earth's crust above me ... I want to unfurl my tender buds like banners to announce the arrival of spring ... I want to feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the blessing of the morning dew on my petals!"

And so she grew...

The second seed said, "Hmmmm. If I send my roots into the ground below, I don't know what I will encounter in the dark. If I push my way through the hard soil above me I may damage my delicate sprouts ... what if I let my buds open and a snail tries to eat them? And if I were to open my blossoms, a small child may pull me from the ground. No, it is much better for me to wait until it is safe."

And so she waited...

A yard hen scratching around in the early spring ground for food found the waiting seed and promptly ate it.

Lesson: Seize the day!

Happy Holidays

Dear 1T1,

There is a time for everything in our lives.

There was a time when you first stepped into JYSS and were uncertain about the school and your class. There was a time when you began to know your classmates, make friends and know your teachers. There was a time when you feel alone, angry or stressed by school matters. There was time when I taught the class and spend many hours with you. I told you there is a time for everything in our lives.

To play, to study. To have fun and know when to be serious. To be a good friend to others and be responsible for ourselves. To show respect to people and be ready for school. To know that the class is special, and for you to come together, it is more than just a coincidence. It is a collective fate, a shared destiny. It is something you shared with others and will be a time where you will remember for the rest of your life. Trust me, friendship is one of the most precious things in life.

Then the time has come when we said goodbye. I am very proud that some of you are able to make it to NA. You have worked hard and earned your place. Well done. Those who have not, do not lose heart. Do not be ashamed and more importantly do not allow yourself to be defeated. Some of you might realise the importance of studying now, I hope you understand that your studies are going to affect your future. There are always teachers there to help you. But in order for teachers to help you, you must first help yourself.

I believe that everyone in the class deserves to do well in everything. For those who do not, I hope you will change for the better. Next year, the class will be a very different one and no matter who is in the class, it is important that all of you must learn to care and show concern for one another.

We had our BBQ recently and I'm delighted to see that more than half the class showed up. For those who didn't, we miss you being there. I shall post some pictures here and I will always remember all of you, no matter where you are and where I am, I wish you all the best and enjoy the holidays!

School Starts (Again)!

My dear class,

I do not know how many of you still visit this blog but I know that some of you still does! In a blink of an eye, the September holidays are over! Some of you told me that the holidays were boring. Nonetheless, I think it must have been a time where all of you get to rest and recharge yourselves for the coming school term.

Tomorrow is the first day of the last semester of the year and I hope all of you are ready for it.
Here is a picture for the class!

It means that we should always look on the bright side of life. We should always remain positive and optimistic. That means no matter what problems we have, we must not give up. We must be brave and have the courage to solve the problem.

If you have any problems, you can always email me or message me about it.

Have a great semester ahead!

Mr Lim

A note to my students

Dear 1T1,

Even though I am not teaching the class now, I still expect you to be responsible for you work and be ready for every lesson. Please do not lose your spelling book and the worksheets that you have been given. Do your corrections and learn from your mistake. The TA 2 will be returned to the class soon and I hope you all will work even harder for your CA2 and year end examination. As I have said to some of you, I hope you will advance to a better class next year.

Some of you asked me why I have to leave the school. It is certainly not an easy choice for me to leave the school because I really like to stay and continue to teach the class. Like I said, I have to leave the school to further my studies at the National University of Singapore. I hope next time you can make it to the University too. That would be my dream for all of you.

Last week we had our pizza party. I hope you all have enjoyed it as much I did. I also hope you all like the photo i printed for each and every single one of you and read the message I hand written for you. I'm also very touched by the kind words that some of you have said or written to me. Thank you very much!

All of you are indeed very special in your own ways even though the class might get noisy at times. Nonetheless, I love teaching you all very much and I will miss the times I had with the class. Remember, every teacher cares for your class. So be good students in class and cooperate with the teacher.

Let's continue to use this blog to learn English. I hope more of the class will take some time to post something meaningful to the class blog.

All the best!
Mr Lim

Letter of the Week!

Dear 1T1,

A few weeks ago, we have done a letter writing exercise. The task is for you to write a letter to your best friend whom you have not met for a very long time. Many of you have written very well and I was very touched by the content of your letters. It is evident that most of you missed your friend from primary who is probably in a different secondary school now.

I would like to commend and congratulate one student who has written exceptionally well and I am very proud of his work. As I have announced to the class, the best letter writer of the class is Md. Nauful and I would like to post his excellent piece of letter on this blog for all to read and learn.

***

Dear Izzuddin,

How are you? I am writing to tell you about my secondary school life and my family members. It has been a long time since we have been posted to a different school. I have been posted to Junyuan Secondary School. How about you, which school are you posted to? One thing I like about the school is that they have CCAs like rugby, National Cadet Corps and many more. There's one thing that I dislike and they are some of my classmates. Some of them are very mischievous, rude and cause disruption to the class.

There are four family members in my family including me. They are very caring, kind and helpful. They are always there for me when I have problems. For my CCA, I joined the National Cadet Corpts. At first, I wanted to join rugby ass it is very interesting but my ankle is still numb. So, I decided to join National Cadet Corps. Maybe for my second CCA, I would rugby. Hope to see you again.

Yours sincerely,

Naufal

Invitation to post on this blog!

Dear 1t1,

I have sent out invitations to those who have given me your email addresses. As most of you haven't got a G-mail, you need to go an extra step forward in order to be able to post on this blog.

Please read the instructions carefully and follow them.

I hope once you are able to log in, you would be able to post some meaningful entries. For example, you can blog about yourself, your interests, your CCA or just how you spend your day.

I will supervise this blog carefully. Please use proper English at ALL TIMES. I will remove any posts which I see as inappropriate. Let's make this space a place for us to learn English.

Happy National Day!

National Day 2008!

Dear 1T1,

The topic and theme for our computer lab lesson today is on National Day. National Day is just 2 days away and it is a very special occasion for our country, Singapore. This year we celebrate our 43rd year of independence. It is indeed a very significant day for all of us.

I'm sure all of us have seen a National Day Parade before. Every year, we have a spectacular show just to celebrate our country birthday! As I show you some videos from the past NDP, I want you to think about the time when you were in the National Stadium for the NDP NE Show. That was when you were in P5! Can you remember it?

I hope you know how important 9 August is for all of us.

Expectations of the Class

Dear 1T1,

Remember what I said about my expectations of the class during my first day? Here's what I want the class to be first and foremost

1) BE GOOD.

Do you see the shape for "Good" is a Circle? This is because to be GOOD has no beginning and no end. We always want to be GOOD instead of being bad. So in class, I would expect each and every one of you to be a GOOD FRIEND as well as my GOOD STUDENT.

Next, every teacher has his/her rules.

2) For my rules, I chose a triangle and at each of its 3 sides are the rules I would expect from each and every student in the class. Respect each other in class and in school. Respect your classmate, respect your teachers and respect everyone in school. Next, be responsible for your work. Responsible for your learning and responsible for yourself. And at the top of my rules, is READY. Be ready for every lesson!

Just as there are rules, there needs to be punishments if anyone misbehaves.

3) If you are rude or rowdy, you would face punishments. Similarly, if you scold or fight with your classmates, the punishments would be serious as well. Please do not commit these offences.

4) This is my favourite part! I believe each and every student in the class is a STAR!
Every week I would award 4 students for their good performance.

They include:
1) Being the Best Student in Class. He/She is a role model in terms of behaviour and school work in class. He/She has shown exemplary behaviour and deserves to be the best student in class.

2) My spelling prince and princess! Every week I would have spelling and dictation with the class. I believe spelling and dictation are very important in learning English. Let's see if you can indeed be my spelling prince and princess of the week.

3) Most improved student. He/She is a student who has shown significant improvement in attitude towards studies, conduct in class and in his/her work.

So class, I hope you will remember what I expect of you at all times!

Mr Lim
